10 Awesome Versions Of Movie Sequels We All Wanted
1. Neill Blomkamp's Aliens Sequel
Few unmade projects of recent years have whipped up quite such a storm of anticipation, only to evaporate completely, than Neill Blomkamp's proposed Alien movie.
The District 9 and Elysium director had reportedly first discussed his ideas with Sigourney Weaver on the set of 2015's Chappie. That same year, Blomkamp released online concept art that revealed his intention to not only bring back Ripley, but also Michael Biehn's Hicks; completely ignoring the divisive AlienĀ³ and Alien Resurrection, his film would serve as a direct sequel to 1986's Aliens.
Many fans were ecstatic at the idea, but there were a number of factors working against Blomkamp: for one, the poor performance of Elysium and Chappie; and for another, the fact that Ridley Scott had already got busy rewriting the Alien timeline with 2012's Prometheus, for which the seasoned director had several sequels planned.
20th Century Fox ultimately backed Scott's vision, and Blomkamp's Alien movie was canned. Scott's prequel series continued with 2017's Alien: Covenant, although the lukewarm response to that film may have put the whole Alien saga on ice once more.
Blomkamp has stressed in recent months that his would-be Aliens sequel is definitely dead and buried, but with Disney's recent purchase of Fox's film and TV interests, it's hard to believe they'll be willing to let such a potentially lucrative property remain dormant for too long.
