10 Awesome Versions Of Movie Sequels We All Wanted

2. The Expendabelles

2010's The Expendables was, in concept, one of the most exciting new movies in years for fans of old school action. With Sylvester Stallone on both leading man and director duties, the Rocky/Rambo legend drafted as many of his musclebound mates as he could to forge the most testosterone-fuelled ensemble ever.

Unfortunately, even with the combined machismo of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Dolph Lundgren, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Terry Crews and more besides, neither The Expendables nor its 2012 sequel turned out to be all that good.

Still, plans were soon in place for a spin-off movie centred on an all-female cast. As with the first Expendables movies, the idea alone was enough to get fans raving online, drafting wishlists of actresses such as Sigourney Weaver, Linda Hamilton and Michelle Yeoh.

Though originally posited to start production early 2014, the spin-off failed to secure any cast members beyond ex-MMA fighter Gina Carano; and as of now, it seems to have either died out completely, or wound up another tortured soul of development hell.

We can only speculate as to what went wrong, but plenty of detractors were none too impressed by the choice of the title The Expendabelles, the hiring of male director Robert Lebovic, or the announced premise that the female mercs would all go undercover as prostitutes.

Instead, 2014's The Expendables 3 followed, and that film's poor performance stopped the series dead - although The Expendables 4 is now said to be on the horizon.
