12 years on from Freddy's Dead (with 1994's New Nightmare in the interim), Robert Englund returned to his signature bogeyman role one last time in 2003's Freddy Vs Jason. The long-anticipated crossover of the Nightmare and Elm Street and Friday the 13th franchises proved an unexpectedly big hit, with worldwide box office takings of almost $115 million.

Naturally, New Line Cinema were eager to cash in with a sequel; and what better way to build on this crazy horror crossover world than by adding Bruce Campbell's Ash, hero of the Evil Dead series?

The script from writer Jeff Katz claimed that Jason's power was rooted in the dreaded Necronomicon, the book responsible for the deadite menace that Ash has battled all his life, drawing the square-jawed, chainsaw-handed dimwit into battle with the two titans of terror.

Fans may have loved the idea, but Bruce Campbell and Evil Dead creator Sam Raimi felt differently, refusing to give up creative control of their baby. As such, the project promptly folded, although Katz's script was later brought to life in comic book form by Dynamite Entertainment.

Several years later, Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street both got disappointing reboots courtesy of Michael Bay's production house Platinum Dunes. Raimi and Campbell, meanwhile, would give their character a more satisfactory revival with TV series Ash Vs Evil Dead, currently on its third season.
