3. Indiana Jones And The City Of The Gods

Ghostsbusters wasn't the only blockbuster franchise to spend a whole lot of time in development hell after 1989. Although Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade seemed, from its title alone, to bring George Lucas and Steven Spielberg's beloved adventure series to a close, a fourth film remained on the cards many years thereafter.

As on all the Indy movies, George Lucas cooked up the essentials of the story, and Frank Darabont was hired to beef it up into a fully fledged script entitled Indiana Jones and the City of the Gods. This draft of the screenplay reunited Indy with Raiders of the Lost Ark's Marion, but would also have brought back Sean Connery as Henry Jones Sr, and - perhaps most significantly - it did not feature Indy and Marion's son, Mutt.

Both Spielberg and Harrison Ford were delighted with Darabont's script (the director called it the best-written Indy since Raiders); but Lucas felt it wasn't quite right and insisted on scrapping it, instead bringing in David Koepp to do a full rewrite as Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

A disgruntled Darabont later leaked his script online, and while it does still feature some of the more derided elements of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (most notably the nuke and the fridge), many feel it would have made for a much better film than the one we ended up with.

Even so, David Koepp has been entrusted once again with script duties on the upcoming fifth Indiana Jones movie, due 2019.
