10 Awful Endings That Screwed Great Movies (And What Should Have Happened Instead)
9. The Truman Show
The Truman Show is one of Jim Carrey's best films, second only perhaps to his performance in Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind. It is a brilliantly plotted, satirical take on reality TV, with a great mix of moral dilemma and humour. Jim Carrey's Truman Burbank is someone you can root for and sympathise with, as he continues to live his life oblivious to the fake world around him. When Carrey is funny, it's genuine, not slapstick. Carrey can be outstanding when he's not clowning around. Because while it was brilliant in The Mask and enjoyable in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, it was starting to get damn right irritating by The Cable Guy. In The Truman Show we caught a glimpse of something so unexpected and so much better. So why does he descend into classic Jim Carrey buffoonery in the closing twenty minutes when reality comes crashing down around him? It's actually quite jarring. I'm sure I wasn't the only one who was pulled out of this world as we witnessed classic Carrey clowning moment? It's this directorial decision, not the open ended 'what will Truman do next?' that broke the final moments of the film. How It Should Have Ended: Jim Carrey should simply have toned down the wackiness. A more genuine sense of shock and betrayal would have made the ending all the more powerful. Sometimes a few simple directional changes can make all the difference.
