8. W.E. (2011) - Oscar Isaac

RottenTomatoes Score: 13% The Plot: Lonely housewife Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish) is obsessed with the story of King Edward VIII's (James D'Arcy) abdication of the throne for his lover, Wallis Simpson (Andrea Riseborough). At an auction of the Windsor estate, however, Wally falls for a charming security guard, Evgeni (Isaac), all while coming to learn that Edward and Wallis' romance was far from perfect. Why It Sucks: Madonna's infamous romantic drama was a colossal critical and commercial bomb, and the most glaring issue with it is that, though the Edward-Wallis drama is genuinely interesting, the mawkish contemporary romance plot is hilariously melodramatic, and simply doesn't connect. Thankfully for Oscar Isaac, he doesn't really shoulder much of the blame, but his frequent appearances throughout are nevertheless unfavourable given his considerable critical success in recent years. He's stuck in the film's wildly unnecessary modern day love story, and like everyone else in the film, especially the excellent Andrea Riseborough, deserves so much better.
