10 Awful Films The Office Actors Want Us To Forget
7. Evan Almighty
Anything Jim Carrey can do, Steve Carell can do just as well - in this case, mug his way through a pretty bland high concept religious comedy. 2003’s Bruce Almighty was a mediocre family friendly affair with Carrey’s high octane, quite irritating performance giving the audience their money’s worth.
It was fine, but did we need a sequel-cum-spin off? The answer, audiences decided en masse, was no. Carell reprised his role as news anchor turned congressman Evan Baxter. Whereas in the original he was a pawn of the deified Bruce’s whims, this time it’s Evan who communicates with God. He is pressed into building an arc after multiple shenanigans, and winds up learning some life lessons before close of business.
An immensely expensive movie for a comedy with low aspirations, Evan Almighty sank without a trace at the box office, and was roasted by critics across the board. As ever, Carell does his level best to wring every joke he can from the lame script, but as the franchise proves, we can’t all work miracles.
