Because we live in a cruel and unjust world, one that simply isn't fair, the Alvin and the Chipmunks franchise somehow managed to convince audiences around the world to part with over $1.3bn of their hard-earned cash, despite each of the four installments being irredeemably awful.

Pop music in children's movies is always a warning sign for the older generation, and it became ten times worse when it was pitched at an eardrum-bleeding frequency that was seemingly designed to irritate the sh*t out of everyone over the age of eight as the titular rodents warbled their way through a medley of terrible, terrible cover versions.

Box office takings dropped by over $200m between the second and fourth installments as even the target audience got fed up of Alvin, Simon and Theodore's antics, but looking at the baffling amount of money the franchise managed to earn a reboot is a terrifying and yet seemingly inevitable prospect.

I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
