10 Awful Looking Upcoming Movies That Will Make Serious $$$
9. Wicked
Archetypes exist to inhabit grand themes, like good and evil, and so tend to fully embody these concepts. Consider the appropriately named Wicked Witch of the West and Good Witch of the North in The Wizard of Oz - two characters whose motivations and personalities are as clear cut as they come. Or they were, until Wicked came along and decided the Wicked Witch needed to be humanised, rationalised and given an entire musical to make her case.
And now, as if to add fuel to the fire, there's a film adaptation of the musical adaptation of the novel spin-off of the original Wonderful Wizard of Oz. If the trailer is anything to go by, the film offers nothing new either to its own lore, or to musical filmmaking more broadly, and is ugly on screen in a way that blends into a live theatre environment. And it's not even going to be the whole story, with Wicked Part Two already slated for release in November 2025!
Audiences still flock in their masses to Wicked on Broadway and London's West End (making it the fourth longest-running musical of all time), and you can be guaranteed everyone - from small children to theatre kids, to their millennial parents - will pile into theatres for this from day one, no matter the quality or lack thereof.
