8. Red One
Since Amazon bought MGM, they have had a whole throbbing, veiny filmmaking arm at their disposal, but aside from re-releasing the James Bond movies into cinemas, they haven't done anything interesting with it. And, despite the e-commerce giant having a modest slate of projects in the works, don't expect that to change any time soon.
Red One is such a project: a Christmas actioner with massive star power in the form of Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans. Kind of like Jack Ryan meets The Santa Clause, it will have a ripped and shredded Santa Claus (played by JK Simmons) get taken, and the Rock (playing yet another iteration of the same old Rock) and Evans team up to buddy movie their way back into North Pole business as usual.
The CGI looks horrendous, with everything not set in the regular human world (including vaguely Christmas-themed monsters like the abominable snowman) appearing rubbery and unreal, and there's nothing about the humour or narrative setup that we haven't seen a hundred times before. But it's got mega stars, a Noel theme and a 12 rating, so families are going to gobble it up like mum's roast potatoes and stuffing.
