Like just about every reboot out there, RoboCop has some references to the original movie, some which work, and some which don't. It's great to occasionally hear the original RoboCop theme playing, but some of the cheeky references fall flat, such as when RoboCop is taking part in a computer simulation against another machine that is entirely computer-controlled. Alex is easily beaten by the machine, causing military tactician Mattox (Jackie Earle Hayley) to make the snide remark, "I wouldn't buy that for a dollar." Of course, this is a reference to the famous, "I'd buy that for a dollar!" scene from the original, which served as a satire on American television and the whole culture in general. I suppose the scene is so iconic that it would have been difficult not to reference it in some way, but did it have to feel so ham-fisted and awkward?
