8. Hugh Grant & Sarah Jessica Parker - Did You Hear About The Morgans?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=82Av0Y9-Ttw Admittedly, I had little hope for Did You Hear About the Morgans as soon as I heard about the premise - an estranged high-flying couple are forced to enter witness relocation in the rural South after witnessing a mob hit - but at least it had the potential to milk the whole "opposites attract" shtick. After all, Hugh Grant is well, the same bumbling, foppish Brit we've seen him play in just about everything, while Sarah Jessica Parker has similarly spent most of her career playing the stylish, chic suburbanite - throw two well-rooted archetypes together like this and it could create magic. But, alas, it doesn't. It doesn't help that Parker and Grant both deliver phoned-in performances that don't gel together in a way that is even remotely fun to watch. A so-called "divorce comedy" like this has to get us to root for the characters to get back together, but at the end, when they finally do, I just felt profoundly bemused that two people so clearly lacking a spark would even bother getting married in the first place. It's difficult to see what each would find appealing in the other - the poor script never explains how the twee Brit and hip New Yorker would find a common ground.
