10 Awful Movies From 2018 With Awesome Concepts
7. Winchester
The Pitch: Based loosely on the "true" story of Sarah Winchester (Helen Mirren), the widow of iconic gun manufacturer William Wirt Winchester, who believes she is being haunted by the ghosts of people who were killed by Winchester rifles.
As such, she builds a gigantic, labyrinthine mansion in order to seal the souls away within the rooms of her house.
The Reality: More than most movies on this list, Winchester had a really terrific premise and probably could've been a great horror film in better hands.
The Spierig Brothers (Predestination) are perfectly capable genre filmmakers, but their script reduced a potentially chilly haunted house tale to a weirdly slack, unconscionably boring effort.
Even Helen Mirren wasn't good in it, making an unconvincing attempt at a Southern American accent and earning herself a Worst Actress Razzie nod in the process (alongside the film's other nominations for Worst Picture, Worst Director and Worst Screenplay).
Honestly, one hopes another writer takes a stab at the concept once the stink of this version has trailed off, because it's too damn delicious an idea to squander on such an awful film.
