The Pitch: Duncan Jones' (Moon, Source Code) long-gestating love letter to Blade Runner, a dark neo-noir set within the same universe as Moon, starring Alexander SkarsgÄrd as a mute bartender attempting to track down his missing girlfriend in Berlin.

The Reality: Though Mute boasted some neat visuals and decent performances, it's also a testament to what can go wrong when Netflix gives an auteur filmmaker free rein to pretty much do whatever they want.

Everybody assumed that an unimpeded Jones would naturally deliver solid gold, but it's important to remember that he didn't write Moon or Source Code, and off the back of both Warcraft and this, it's clear he should leave the scripting to others.

Between feeling like an ersatz Blade Runner rip-off and failing to strike a consistent tone, Mute turned out a hugely disappointing car crash of conflicting ideas. It had interesting moments, but fell desperately short of expectations.
