10 Awful Movies Stranger Things Actors Want Us To Forget

5. Maya Hawke (Robin) - Mainstream

Weirdly, Joe Keery is not the only Stranger Things performer to star in a movie revolving around a social media fanatic. In 2018, Maya Hawke starred in Mainstream (which was directed by Francis Ford Coppola's granddaughter, Gia Coppola.) Her character in the film, Frankie, is a failing filmmaker who thinks she's hit the big time after teaming up with an internet guru who's creating a new social media outlet.

Based on the trailer, Mainstream looks very promising. Maya Hawke looks like a leading lady, Andrew Garfield is having a ball chewing the scenery, and the film's surreal look gives each scene a distinctive and ambitious style.

Sadly, that's where the positives come to an abrupt end. Mainstream's intentions to criticise the fanatical obsession with social media are unmistakable but it never makes an original argument, causing the commentary to sound unbearably outdated. Obviously, social media can be criticised very effectively in film. (Look at The Social Network.) Despite all Mainstream's ambitions and great performances, this indulgent story never seems to have much to say beyond 'social media can be bad.'
