10 Awful Movies That Embarrassingly Made A Fortune
3. Grown Ups
Worldwide Box Office Gross: $271 million
How does Adam Sandler keep getting work? Because a large group of evil-doers somewhere keep paying to see his shoddy movies and making them box office successes, despite the fact that he hasn't made a funny film since the 90s. Long gone are the days of Happy Gilmore - these are the days of You Don't Mess With the Zohan and Jack and Jill, otherwise known as the end days.
Grown Ups' bare narrative consists of a group of man-children having fun. That's it. After the characters are bent over, slapping their knees laughing at some god-awful slapstick gag, it's hard not to see that as an insult to your face. It's as if David Spade's annoying face is laughing directly at you for parting with your hard-earned cash to see Kevin James exist on a 30ft screen.
Yet enough people have been duped to ensure that despite the universal unpopularity of Grown Ups, we were inflicted with a second, creatively titled Grown Ups 2, which again consists of a bunch of unlikeable man-children having fun. Where's the conflict? Where are the stakes? There's nothing less fun than watching other people have fun, especially when they haven't had to work for it. With this in mind, you'd have more fun flushing your money down the toilet, which incidentally would be more intelligent toilet humour than any this movie has to offer.
