10 Awful Movies That Wasted An A-List Cast

1. Gangster Squad

Suicide Squad
Warner Bros. Pictures

Gangster Squad could have been incredible, with a loose retelling of the titular law enforcement division's story offering plenty of scope for bolting the tropes of the crime thriller and the period piece onto an action-packed blockbuster.

Despite the sheer weight of talent involved in front of the camera, director Ruben Fleischer couldn't manage to successfully pull off any of the multiple genres that he tried to fold into the confused narrative, resulting in a massive missed opportunity.

As well as starring two actors with a real claim to being named the best of their respective generations in Ryan Gosling and Sean Penn, Gangster Squad also balanced rising stars Emma Stone, Anthony Mackie and Michael Pena alongside grizzled veterans Robert Patrick and Nick Nolte, anchored by the typically-solid Josh Brolin in the lead.

Sadly, the movie itself was a whole lot less than the sum of its parts, and while a stylish spin on a familiar tale, Gangster Squad was capable of so much more.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
