Every now and again a movie comes along that you can tell has been precision-engineered specifically for awards season glory, and All the King's Men definitely fell into that category.
A remake of a movie that won the Academy Award for Best Picture, which itself was adapted from a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, written and directed by the critically-acclaimed scribe behind Schindler's List and Gangs of New York, headlined by a cast of esteemed actors that were no strangers to being in the trophy hunt themselves. What could possibly go wrong?
Quite a lot it turns out, with the most important being the fact that it just wasn't a very good movie, and ended up becoming a colossal failure that couldn't even crack $10m at the global box office. That's a pretty ignominious fate for a would-be prestige drama that had Sean Penn, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Anthony Hopkins, James Gandolfini and Mark Ruffalo playing the six main roles.
