4. Bobby (2006)
The Ensemble: Harry Belafonte, Nick Cannon, Emilio Estevaz, Laurence Fishburne, Heather Graham, Anthony Hopkins, Helen Hunt, Joshua Jackson, Ashton Kutcher, Shia LaBeouf, Lindsay Lohan, William H. Macy, Demi Moore, Freddy Rodriguez, Martin Sheen, Christian Slater, Sharon Stone, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Elijah Wood Here's a movie that kind of slipped under the radar upon first release and, uh, hasn't really re-emerged yet. Maybe that's because it was directed by Emilio Estevaz. You know, that '80s actor who was in the Brat Pack, and star of movies like
Loaded Weapon 1 (to be fair, that's awesome). An admirable venture was
Bobby, though, and one with a seriously impressive hodgepodge of stars to its name. The movie concerns the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy, who was shot in the kitchen of the Ambassador Hotel in 1968 whilst in Los Angeles. You can definitely admire Estevaz's agenda with this one, which seems to be to purely honor the tragic assassination of Bobby Kennedy, but he doesn't quite seem to know how to put the thing together. The problem with the flick, which uses its ensemble in a kind of Robert Altman style to bring together interlinking stories around the central murder, feels more like a series of "guest star" vignettes. It's hard to take it seriously, despite the fact that everybody involved seems to have had good intentions. For a movie which consists of such a large and talented cast of incredibly famous actors, it's a shame that
Bobby is so darn forgettable, then.
