10 Awful Opening Scenes In Otherwise Awesome Horror Movies
1. Alien 3
There are few films that suffered more studio interference than Alien 3. Its production was so barbaric, it's a miracle David Fincher's debut feature saw the light of day.
Even though this entry pales compared to the first two instalments, Alien 3 has become a cult-classic over the years (especially the Assembly Cut). And when you compare it to the follow-ups, this threequel looks like a freakin' masterpiece.
Still, no matter how much you love Alien 3, no one, and I mean NO ONE, can defend the prologue.
But before we talk about that, let's look at the ending of Aliens. After the Xenomorph Queen attacks Hicks, Newt, and Bishop, Ripley storms in suited up in a mech, spouts a killer one-liner, and kicks the crap out of the starbeast before blasting her out of the airlock. Not only was it an epic showdown, it was uplifting to see Ripley rescue her friends, especially Newt, who recently lost her family. The film concludes with the quartet returning to cryosleep, readying for their next adventure.
If you were eager to see this lot again, I got bad news. For some preposterous reason, the creators behind Alien 3 decided to open with Ripley's ship crashing on Fiorina 161, which results in the death of Hicks, Newt, and Bishop.
Based on Aliens' ending, we assumed Alien 3 would kick off with these beloved characters readying for another dangerous mission. But since they all died off-screen, it felt like a slap in the face. Not only was it a terrible way to start the film, it ruins Aliens' climax, since we know the characters' victory over the Alien Queen meant nothing.
