10 Awful Opening Scenes In Otherwise Awesome Horror Movies
2. Predator
Predator isn't just a great blockbuster; it should serve as the template to execute an action movie correctly. It has a flawless cast, simple but strong characters, white-knuckle action, a testosterone-filled dynamic, and astounding special effects.
What really makes Predator work (apart from the one-liners) is the atmosphere. Because the titular hunter is usually invisible, we don't know what the Predator is capable of or what it looks like. As a result, every scene leaves the viewers on the edge of their seat.
But do you know what would've made this near-perfect movie actually perfect? If we never knew the Predator was an alien. In the first minute, we watch an extraterrestrial spaceship drop onto Earth. Rather than saving this reveal for later, the movie spoilt the antagonist's identity straightaway.
Although Predator is still terrifying, could you imagine how much scarier it would've been if you had ZERO idea what Dutch's squad was up against? If this prologue was cut, you wouldn't know if Dutch was fighting an alien, a forest spirit, a cyborg, a mutant, or a wendigo.
Because this intro doesn't offer any information that isn't revealed later, there was no reason to include it.
