10 Awful Opening Scenes In Otherwise Awesome Horror Movies
7. Paranormal Activity
It's astounding how influential and lucrative the Paranormal Activity franchise is, considering the original was limited by a $15,000 budget.
But what's more impressive is how so many viewers stuck out with first entry, considering how boring it starts. Oren Peli's first feature begins with Katie arriving home, only to see her partner Micah filming her with his new camera. We then watch them wandering around the house, posing for the camera, chopping meat in the kitchen, and (get ready for this) eating food. Not exactly riveting stuff, is it?
Being the devil's advocate, you might ask, "What else would you expect? Due to the micro-budget, Paranormal Activity couldn't open with a showstopping sequence, could it?"
However, The Blair Witch Project got around this problem, by delving into the lore behind the film's subject matter. After several residents discuss the legends revolving around the titular witch, viewers felt apprehensive before the ensemble set foot in the woods.
Paranormal Activity could've hooked viewers straight away by starting in a similar manner. The first scene could've had Micah discussing the strange goings-on in the house, referencing ghosts, poltergeists, and demons. Instead, we watched him... chopping food.
