10 Awful Opening Scenes In Otherwise Awesome Horror Movies

6. Scream 4

Even though Scream always had its tongue rammed into its own cheek, every instalment up until Scream 4 kicked off with a proper gore-fest. The first instalment has one of the most well-crafted openings in slasher history. Even though the intro Scream 2 is crammed with meta-humour, it still gives viewers chills. As for Scream 3, that starts with Ghostface murdering one of the main characters, Cotton Weary.

Ironically, Scream 4 is the only instalment that fumbles the opening, despite being among the few redeemable sequels. As the film opens, we see two young women being hacked to death by our masked killer.

Suddenly, we learn this sequence is the pre-title sequence of Stab 6, which is being watched by Rachel (Anna Paquin) and Chloe (Kristen Bell). At first, this seems like a pretty decent fake-out.

But it then goes too far. As Rachel discusses how derivative the slasher industry has become, Chloe stabs her! This scene is then revealed to be the pre-title sequence for Stab 7, which is watched by two friends, Jenny and Marnie, who are then murdered by the real Ghostface.

However, this opening lacks tension, since the two "gotcha!" moments overshadow it. Also, you can't get invested in these characters, since you're half-expecting the scene to be the pre-title sequence for Stab 8!
