10 Bad Film Adaptations Of Great Books
3. Dreamcatcher
There are so many Stephen King novels that it is hard to keep track of all of them, and even harder to keep track of which ones have had their own film adaptations. But where Stephen spends more time on most of his novels, he wrote Dreamcatcher as a way to recuperate from a car accident and finished it within six months.
Dreamcatcher is about a group of friends who save a boy with Down syndrome from a bunch of bullies and discover that he has the ability to grant them powers, such as telepathy, dream sharing and the ability to trace each other's movements. Things begin to escalate when they are caught in the middle of an alien invasion and the US Armies attempts to cover it up.
But the problem with Dreamcatcher was the same with so many other adaptations of Stephen King's work: a lack of respect for the source material and a desire to do things differently.
Despite a strong performance from its cast, critics and audiences were unhappy with the film's decisions to focus less on the supernatural elements of the book and instead contort it into a gore infested monster movie.
