10 Bad Film Adaptations Of Great Books

2. The Hobbit

After the success of the original Lord Of The Rings trilogy, it comes as no surprise that New Line and Warner Bros would be interested in adapting another one of Tolkien’s books, The Hobbit.

Serving as a prequel to the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, The Hobbit tells the tale of Bilbo Baggins and his adventure with Gandalf and a party of Dwarves as they seek to reclaim their home, The Lonely Mountain, and its treasure from the terrifying dragon Smaug.

But unfortunately, New Line and Warner Bros desire to cash in on the franchise for as much as they could led to the very questionable decision of turning The Hobbit into a trilogy of films rather than the originally planned two films. This decision led to Del Toro leaving the project altogether and forcing Jackson to try and piece together a coherent story.

While the films did make close to $3 billion collectively, they did not achieve the same critical acclaim as the original trilogy and is remembered more as an example of how a corporation's greed can have a negative impact on an original ideas legacy.
