This one may well be split opinion and will depend upon your thoughts on Alien 3...

While Alien 3 clearly had some problems caused be a hugely troublesome production, it was Alien Resurrection that fully doomed the Alien franchise

In the case of Alien 3, it at least offered up the intriguing proposition of Sigourney Weaver's Ripley being essentially bulletproof against the extra-terrestrial threat of the day. Of course, that's due to how the franchise's main protagonist was impregnated with the baby Alien Queen.

Yes, it was a bumpy ride, but Alien 3 at least concluded with the memorable sight of Ripley throwing herself - and the Alien Queen that resided within her - to a fiery death. Then Alien Resurrection rolled around five years later, took the action forward 200 years in the future, and gave us a Ripley clone that was likewise impregnated with another Alien Queen.

For this Ripley - named Ripley 8 - she had enhanced strength, acid blood, and could telepathically communicate with the Xenomorphs. Uhu. And as for the Alien Queen which was extracted from Ripley 8 early in the film, that creature bizarrely had some of Ripley's memories. Oh, and the Alien Queen later gave birth to its own offspring, which was a Xenomorph/Ripley hybrid.

Safe to say, Alien Resurrection well and truly jumped the shark, forced the IP to be rerouted to the god-awful Alien vs. Predator movies, and then later rebooted the series with the extremely bland Prometheus and Alien: Covenant.

Then again, Resurrection does have that badass basketball scene towards its start.
