In anyone's book, casting Shaquille O'Neal as any character is a bad move - the guy simply isn't an actor. Casting him as a relatively obscure comic book hero in an era before even major comic book movies were popular was simply insane. Even if O'Neal was cast today, in an era where comic book movies are hot property in Hollywood, and even if it was as a major comic book hero like Black Panther, it would still be a bad move. Steel was a recipe for disaster and that's exactly what it turned out to be. O'Neal was wooden, uninteresting and cartoonish and he rightly earned a Razzie Award nomination as Worst Actor for his performance in the film, but he "lost" out to Kevin Costner for his role in The Postman.
