5. The Fourth Kind (2009)
Not only did the filmmakers marketed this
Paranormal Activity-wannabe as being inspired by actual happenings, they laced the very film with what they claimed was real footage of people who experienced close encounters with Alfs lesser-known cousin Barf, as though the whole thing were a pseudo-documentary. Universal went as far as releasing featurettes from would-be experts in the paranormal who testified as to the validity of the films plot points. Turns out Mila Jovovichs acting abilities were not the only thing we were lied to about, as nothing related in the movie even approaches reality. The closest any factual investigation came to resembling the film was an instance in 2006 where 24 Nome, Alaska residents disappeared after a mix of alcohol and nasty weather when sour.
