10 Behind-The-Scenes Glimpses Of Movie Scenes We Never Got To See

John Carpenter's The Thing is an expertly-crafted horror masterpiece, so it's surprising to learn that Carpenter originally planned to include a vaguely goofy comic relief sequence involving grizzled protagonist R.J. MacReady (Kurt Russell).

The scene would show MacReady blowing up what appears to be a balloon while watching a VHS tape, but the gag would eventually reveal MacReady to have inflated a blow-up doll.

It would at least pay off with a scare later, as Nauls (T. K. Carter) would accidentally bump into the doll and, in his terror, accidentally pop it.

Carpenter's rationale for cutting the "character" from the movie hasn't been made clear, but it's tough to begrudge the exclusion, especially given the potential for it to inject a little too much silliness into the fray and upend the film's tone.
