Many of the best movies on this list are slow-burners, but horror fans who prefer their films to get to the visceral, violent point in a more timely manner should look no further than Green Room.

The film stars the late Anton Yelchin as the bassist of a down on their luck punk band who reluctantly take a gig at a backwoods Oregon venue. Unfortunately for them, the club turns out to be run by neo-Nazi skinheads who have just committed homicide and will stop at nothing to cover up the murder, even if it means dispatching the band who have just stumbled upon it.

While the old ‘youngsters at the mercy of murderous madmen’ plot is by no means a new concept, director Jeremy Saulnier freshens that hackneyed theme with his energetic filming style and viciously violent moments. The cast is fantastic too. Yelchin is wonderful in one of his final roles before his untimely real-life death, as are co-stars Imogen Poots and Alia Shawkat, but it’s Patrick Stewart’s chillingly subdued turn as the neo-Nazi club owner that is the movie’s true standout performance.
