The Coen Brothers serve up one of their very best (if also least accessible) films to date with this hilarious dark comedy about a Jewish man (Michael Stuhlbarg, who played surgeon Nicodemus West in Doctor Strange) struggling with a crisis of faith after his life begins to crumble around him.

Surely the most personal of the Coens' movies to date, A Serious Man contemplates not only what it means to be Jewish but also the general form and function of religion, and the nature of faith.

Stuhlbarg gives a magnificent breakthrough performance in the lead role (a major gamble for the Coens given that he was basically unknown prior to this), and it features surely one of the most memorable endings to any movie of the last decade. A masterpiece.

Trivia: A Serious Man also stars Amy Landecker, who has a tiny role in Doctor Strange as a fellow doctor, but most of her part was unfortunately cut from the final film.
