2. Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (Mark Hamill)

The darkest and greatest Star Wars movie to date, Empire Strikes Back shaves away the goofier edges of A New Hope, with Irvin Kershner's strong direction ensuring perfect pacing and an immaculate handle on tone.

From the opening Battle of Hoth through to Yoda's introduction and the climactic showdown against Vader, complete with the worst-kept plot twist in cinema history, it's a stunningly well-wrought space opera in every respect.

Almost 40 years since, the series hasn't even come close to reaching this level again, and the fact that it possibly never will is all the proof needed of Empire's enduring legacy. If The Last Jedi does indeed crib plot elements from it as many fans believe it will, it'll be for damn good reason.
