Can anything really be said about Christopher Nolan's superhero movie masterpiece that hasn't already? Highly influential as both a comic book film and a blockbuster, The Dark Knight proved that the genre could aspire to merely be great cinema without the patronising "for a comic book film" qualifier, ending up a riveting crime thriller akin to Heat or The Departed.

Christian Bale is once again great as Batman and Bruce Wayne, but he's thoroughly outdone by two of his co-stars, namely Aaron Eckhart as Two-Face, and of course, posthumous Oscar winner Heath Ledger as The Joker.

It can't be overestimated how iconic the movie has become over the last decade, setting an incredibly high bar for every Batman film to follow, one that could very well never be topped.
