It might be easy to dismiss Boyhood as a film-making gimmick whose merit was solely in the incredibly commitment to making a film over 12 years with the same cast, but that would be a reductive assessment of what was unequivocally the best film of 2014.

Sure, the "gimmick" is its major hook, but it's no more than the entry point for a stunning coming-of-age epic that explores not just major life events, but major emotional landmarks, with the focus shifting to what Ellar Coltrane's Mason holds most important. It's a hell of an achievement.
