9. There Never Was An Aaron - Primal Fear

Fight Club Edward Norton
Paramount Pictures

Primal Fear revolves around star defense attorney Martin Vail (Richard Gere), who agrees to defend teenage altar boy Aaron Stampler (Edward Norton) when he's accused of murdering an Archbishop.

It's later revealed that Aaron did in fact kill the Archbishop in revenge for being sexually abused, but appears to be suffering from dissociative identity disorder and committed the killing while assuming a sociopathic alternate persona, Roy.

Ultimately Aaron is found not guilty by reason of insanity and remanded to a psychiatric hospital, but during his final meeting with Vail, he reveals that he faked the identity disorder and has been gaming the system the entire time.

To put a disturbing capper on it, when Vail asks him if Roy ever existed, Aaron chillingly replies, "There never was an Aaron."

Aaron had in fact been pretending to be shy and retiring when the violent Roy was his true self all along.

At this point all a shell-shocked Vail can do is walk away in disbelief while Aaron continues to taunt him.
