Charlton couldn't pull off the three-peat this time, but it's okay. We've only got one of the most referenced, parodied, and influential film twists of all time in his place.

Do we even need to explain this? Vader chases Luke to the big chasm thing and cuts off his hand. Luke confronts Vader about how Obi-Wan told him he'd murdered his father. Vader says that Obi-Wan's telling a big old porkie. He says the line. Everyone cheers.

The line is monumentally important to the Star Wars canon, not just because it completely changes the character dynamics between hero and villain, but also because it shatters the last remaining vestiges of Luke's innocence.

He believed that his father was a noble Jedi slain by a vicious monster. Instead, he was a fallen angel who turned on his friends in pursuit of power. It holds up on every level, even if Obi-Wan did call him "Darth" like that was his first name in A New Hope.

Sci-fi or otherwise, this is one of the greatest twists of all time. Search your feelings, you know it to be true...
