10 Best 80s Horror Movies You Probably Haven't Seen

1. The Vanishing

Now, The Vanishing may be considered more of a thriller than a flat-out horror movie, but that doesn’t stop this film from being absolutely terrifying. Stanley Kubrick (that’s right - the director of The Shining) even called it the scariest film he’s ever seen.

The film centres around a Dutch traveler, Rex (Gene Bervoets), who becomes obsessed with discovering the true reason behind his girlfriend, Saskia’s (Johanna ter Steege) mysterious disappearance.

It may sound like a fairly simple and straightforward missing person thriller, but The Vanishing somehow manages to feel fresh and innovative.

The reason for this is how the film is not just a usual whodunnit - we know exactly who is behind Saskia’s disappearance from the outset, but we don’t know what has happened to her.

This mystery takes us all the way to the climax of the movie, in which the true nature of Saskia’s disappearance is revealed in heart-stopping and breathtaking fashion.

Dealing with themes of obsession, and how curiosity sometimes can in fact kill the cat, The Vanishing is a sophisticated, chilling and absolutely terrifying thriller that should definitely get more attention.
