10 Best 80s Horror Movies You Probably Haven't Seen

4. Prince Of Darkness

Arguably no other director has influenced 80s horror as much as John Carpenter. The director-slash-composer has been behind some of the most iconic movies of the 80s, including The Fog, Christine, They Live and The Thing. However, one of his more under-appreciated movies is 1987’s Prince of Darkness.

The film follows an unnamed priest (Donald Pleasance) who invites a quantum physicist, Howard Birick (Victor Wang) and his many students to investigate a mysterious green cylinder containing a swirling green liquid, which if opened, could spell the end of the world.

Although the film may lack the beautiful simplicity and well-developed characters of some of Carpenter’s best works, it makes up for it in it’s glorious visual imagery. There are plenty of wonderfully gross and gory body horror to be had, only made more effective by some tactile visual effects.

This may be one of the few Carpenter movies to not a critical reappraisal in the years following, but it’s definitely still worth a look, particularly if you are a Carpenter fan (and let’s face it, who isn’t).
