If you’re looking for an 80s horror movie that is a little different and original, then look no further than Kathryn Bigelow’s Near Dark.

Bigelow may be a director of Oscar winning, “important” movies nowadays - helming films like The Hurt Locker and Detroit - but people often forget that she was once a director of small and intricate genre movies.

With Near Dark, she takes on the vampire and western genres, in which a young man, Caleb (Adrian Pasdar), who, after being turned into a vampire, joins a cult of dangerous and scary travelling vampires.

Just like 1984’s The Terminator, the film combines entertaining genre thrills with a charming central love story between the two leads. Also, there are some truly terrifying sequences, including that iconic sequence at the bar involving Bill Paxton.

If you are at all a fan of Bigelow’s work, then make sure to check this one out.
