Sometimes all you need is Gaspar Noe’s violent, psychedelic direction, a committed group of dancers, and an LSD-spiked sangria bowl to create one of the most nerve-wracking films in recent memory.

Climax is a rare horror film that's frightening on the surface and leaves a lot to your imagination. The camera is a floating passive observer of this descent into madness, never showing us what these people see in their drug-addled minds.

The trippy colors, intense EDM soundtrack, and bodily harm are nightmarish on their own, but trying to picture how these characters are experiencing them in their altered states makes for a different kind of terror.

Noe gives the cast of trained dancers lots of room to improvise, and they completely throw themselves into this chaotic premise. Their dancing is impressive and hypnotic, and the ad-libbed conversations clue us into the characters’ personalities, desires, and fears.

But once the wheels come off, these personal details lead to some horrific pay-offs, and the way the actors thrash around and contort their bodies makes for some disturbing imagery in the third act.

By the end of Climax, you’ll never even want to think about doing drugs.

Ryan Gallerani hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
