10 Best Andy Serkis Performances

4. Dr. Adrian King - Death of a Superhero

Planet Of The Apes Andy Serkis
Tribeca Film

This small independent film is filled with some well-known actors, but the appearance of Andy Serkis helps to give it a sense of prestige. He works alongside Thomas Brodie-Sangster's Donald, a young boy suffering from cancer and his own mortality. This character was a great avenue for Serkis to show off how capable he is at playing something true to life.

His more over the top performances are wonderful, but getting the opportunity to work with realism was a welcome departure for the actor. The therapist Dr Adrian King was understanding and likeable, able to be both a great figure of comfort for the lead and an honest friend as well. Having dealt with the loss of his wife, it felt like King had a visceral connection to death and thus was the perfect option to guide this dying young boy.

This came across in Serkis' performance. There was a constant sense of dancing with death, in how he accepted but was still consumed by losing his wife. The character walked the line of professional and personal and this made for an incredibly emotional performance filled with nuance.
