10 Best Andy Serkis Performances

3. John D'Auban -Topsy-Turvy

Planet Of The Apes Andy Serkis
Pathe

This Mike Leigh directed film depicted the creation of The Mikado, a comic operetta by the famous duo Gilbert & Sullivan. It was a fun historical exploration of the famously inappropriate production.

Serkis plays John D'Auban, the acclaimed English dancer and choreographer. Famous for working alongside the duo and for his choreography on comic operas, pantomime and burlesque, this was a remarkable historical role for Serkis to sink his teeth into.

He seems aware that this is a large spotlight for him as every moment he is on screen he is taking any opportunity he can to make the most of it. Always moving exactly as you would expect a comic dancer too, combined with his bold cockney accent this performance was enthralling and hilarious.

He paid particular attention to how the character moved. As being a dancer and choreographer, movement was integral to the role. With quirky and strange dancing Serkis glides across the screen constantly full of energy and barely keeping still.

It is also very well known that the actor learned how to play the violin entirely for one scene in the film, which ended up being cut. It's a great example of how dedicated an actor he is.
