10 Best Animated Comic Book Films Of The Decade

5. Justice League: Gods And Monsters

Batman Under the Red Hood
Warner Bros.

Alternate realities are a favourite go-to for comic book creators and studios. The chance to explore various what-if scenarios with characters known to act in only way makes for compelling storytelling and plot twists. This movie was no different.

Gods and Monsters follows Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman in an alternative universe where the three constitute a brutal order known for playing judge, jury and executioner. Wonder Woman is an alien super warrior wronged by her own family who murdered her newly wed. Batman is a former scientist who is a literal vampire. While Superman is the son of none other than General Zod.

The story follows a predictable pattern of powerful people such as Lex Luthor and Amanda Waller plotting to take down the league while spreading fear among the general populace. However the final sequence with the three fending off an all-assault from both the government and the real bad guys was done to perfection. The battle is also brilliant for how well it completes the transition of these characters from know-it-all’s with a God complex to humble servants of humanity.

After battling Galactus and pinning Hulk Hogan in the main event of Wrestlemania, I've taken a break from living in fantasy worlds, to focus on writing about them. I'm a comic book geek, a wrestling mark, a break dancer, and a scientist. One of those things may not be true.
