7. Kubo And The Two Strings (2016)

Though both were made by the same studio, Kubo and the Two Strings is a completely different experience from Coraline.
Despite the rather predictable storyline, the movie has plenty of charm thanks to its stunning visuals. The sunlit vistas of the landscape are particularly well done, and there is a truly mesmerising underwater sequence.
The film is also not afraid to go dark when it wants to. Kubo’s aunts are especially creepy, with their gothic aesthetic contrasting brilliantly with the rest of the movie’s vibrancy.
Working alongside such visuals is a unique soundtrack that blends western and eastern influences into one cohesive musical experience.
As such, Kubo and the Two Strings more than deserved its BAFTA win and its Oscar nominations despite its disappointing box office performance.
