10 Best Animated Movies NOT By Disney Or Pixar
5. The Breadwinner (2017)
Animation Studio: Cartoon Saloon
The Breadwinner doesn’t get enough attention. Though it received plenty of critical praise (including an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature), it was not financially successful.
Based on a children’s book by the Canadian author Deborah Ellis, The Breadwinner tells the story of a young girl and her family living in Afghanistan under the rule of the Taliban.
Thematically, the film addresses war, sexism, and religious extremism, and given such themes, it almost feels wrong to class it as a children’s movie. Indeed, compared to the typical animated feature, The Breadwinner is incredibly dark.
However, it does have its glimmers of hope as well. Though much of the film has a dusty, down-beaten aesthetic, there is also plenty of vibrant colour as well, and the music is superb throughout.
The Breadwinner is certainly not for everyone, but for those looking for an animated feature that’s averse to the mainstream, this movie is unmissable.
