10 Best Animated Movies NOT By Disney Or Pixar

4. The Prince Of Egypt (1998)

Dreamworks

Animation Studio: DreamWorks

Given that The Prince of Egypt is an animated version of the story of Moses from The Book of Exodus, it is understandably not a film that appeals to everyone. Crucially, this movie can be enjoyed by anyone regardless of their faith.

In contrast to the typical animated feature, The Prince of Egypt has quite a rugged colour palette dominated by darkened yellows, browns, and reds, all of which help to create a rich and believable atmosphere.

Whilst the cast includes many well-known actors such as Ralph Fiennes, Val Kilmer, and Sandra Bullock, the characters themselves feel in harmony with the environment they inhabit, and much of this is down to Philip LaZebnik and Nicholas Meyer's screenplay, which morphs the biblical story into an accessible tale.

The music is also superb, for it manages to be both dramatic and catchy at the same time. Indeed, The Prince of Egypt has even been turned into a musical for the stage in which many of the key tracks from the film are performed.

Though there are plenty of other great animated features from DreamWorks, The Prince of Egypt is a wonderful piece of storytelling that doesn’t get the attention it deserves.
