10 Best Animated Movies Of The 2010s (That Aren't Disney Or Pixar)

10. The Book Of Life

Mexican Halloween is not just a throwaway sex joke from an early episode of Community, it€™s also the basis for one of the quickly forgotten animated gems of 2014. With Guillermo Del Toro acting as one of the producers, The Book of Life is a typically Disney styled story involving unrequited love and the magical acts that only get in the way set against the back drop of Dia de Muertos. There€™s also the standard impossibly cute pet companion for the love interest to share her feelings with. The narrative and characters follow the set formula for good, solid kids movies- the Gods get in the way of young love and the hero must find his way back to her on a quest across many lands- but where The Book of Life breaks away from this is with its world. Visually it€™s stunning, full of vibrant colours and jaw dropping landscapes. It€™s like a piñata full of sweets is exploding over the screen at every turn. The detail in this film is exquisite, it€™s like a Fabergé egg or an old fashioned music box. It€™s painfully gorgeous; it reminds you of pressing your nose up against the window of a sweet shop when you were little. Movie snobs probably won€™t like it, but it€™s fun and sweet and lovely. So sit down, shut up, turn your brain of 95 minutes and just enjoy it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBw5YScs8iQ
