9. Treasure Planet

Ghost in the Shell
Buena Vista Pictures

Treasure Planet's story may not have been original, but it was beautifully and loving crafted as an homage to both Treasure Island and the Sci-Fi genre.

Another example of just how perfectly Sci-Fi can slot into the family film genre, Treasure Planet, while a moderate success, never quite reached the same heights as the other Disney releases of the same era.

Treasure Planet boasted an impressive cast; with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, David Hyde Pierce and Emma Thompson but a few of the names to lend their voices to the film.

The film's story is a classic, quite literally - the story having been lifted from Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island and given a shiny Sci-Fi makeover, and it is no less enjoyable for it.

It's hard to find anything to dislike about Treasure Planet, it's colourful, it's fun, and it has a great theme song performed by The Goo Goo Dolls. There were even a handful of very addicting (although somewhat simplistic) PC games released on CD-roms that came free in cereal boxes, which many children of the 90's remember fondly to this day.
