10 Best Animated Sci-Fi Movies

2. Akira

Ghost in the Shell
Bleeding Cool

Akira was released in 1988, and, much like Ghost in the Shell, is widely considered one of the greatest anime movies ever made. It has a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes, sitting amongst top shelf fare such as Sam Raimi's Spider-Man and Midnight Cowboy.

The movie's premise alone is enough to sell any sci-fi fans who may not have seen it.

After a singularity destroys Tokyo, it is rebuilt as Neo-Tokyo, and in the wasteland of terrorism and anti-government sentiments, it follows the leader of a biker gang whose best friend gains telekinetic abilities.

If that brief description isn't enough to pique your interest, then you honestly don't know what you're missing. Akira is acknowledged as not only one of the greatest animated films ever made, but one of the greatest sci-fi films, and this isn't an accolade that it takes lightly.

It is thoroughly deserving of all of the praise it gets, and if you haven't seen it, then don't put it off any longer.
