5. Children Of Men (2006)

The Road
Warner Bros.

Children of Men is equal parts technical marvel and raw gutpunch. Single-camera and tracking shot sequences insert you directly into the heart of a truly broken Britain. Descending slowly into a totalitarian state which sits firmly on (and then tumbles over) the brink of social collapse whilst the human race comes to terms with its sudden mass infertility of women, the film juggles sociopolitical revolution and deeply personal, deeply human drama effortlessly.

Narrative aside, the overwhelming atmosphere is artfully crafted by both the raw, grubby and downright grim set design and stellar camerawork that pulls you in more and more as the runtime ticks on. These two essential techniques coalesce together, ensuring that every scene is as intense as it can be.

Children of Men remains some of the most engrossing, dramatic science fiction that we've seen in film in the 21st Century. Despite its overwhelming mood of pessimism, the film's brilliance is that it uses the societal breakdown and pseudorealism to tell a potentially hopeful story in faux-future Britain. As action-laden as it is affecting, Children of Men is definitely worth a watch, and its technical prowess and story weight will no doubt reward a second look too!
